Have you ever tried Cheesecake Factory’s fried macaroni and cheese balls from their appetizer menu? They sell out quickly and for good reason!

They are delicious and filling. I often find I need a salad to counter the richness of them.

Air fryer fried macaroni and cheese balls, also known as mac n cheese bites, are a delicious and indulgent dish that combines the creamy comfort of traditional macaroni and cheese with a crispy, golden brown exterior.

Fried macaroni and cheese is often served as an appetizer, side dish, or even a snack.

It’s commonly served with dipping sauces like marinara, ranch dressing, aioli, or your favorite dipping sauce, which complement the flavors and textures of the dish.

If you have leftover macaroni in the refrigerator, this is a great way to use it up. Another great idea is using pumpkin mac during the fall months!

How to Cook Air Fried Macaroni and Cheese Balls

    • Prepare the macaroni: Cook the macaroni according to package directions for al dente noodles.

    • Make the cheesy sauce: In a pot, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in flour. Slowly whisk in half and half until well blended. Cook for about 2 minutes to let the sauce thicken. Add cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper. Stir until melted. Add macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat.

    • Refrigerate: Spray a 9″x9″ baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the macaroni and cheese into the pan. Flatten the mixture as much as you can. Place the pan in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.

    • Make the balls: After 4 hours, slice the macaroni into 16 squares. Shape each square into a ball. If they are not holding their shape, return the macaroni to the refrigerator to chill more.

    • Prepare the breading station: Use 2 shallow bowls, one for eggs and milk (scrambled), and another for panko bread crumbs, olive oil, and Italian seasoning blended together. Use a fork to incorporate the olive oil well. Microwave the panko for 60 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds until lightly browned.

    • Bread the balls: Dip each macaroni ball in the egg mixture and then panko, shaking off any excess between steps. May repeat the steps for a thicker coating. I did two coats on mine to get all of the macaroni covered.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Fried Macaroni and Cheese Balls

This crispy mac and cheese recipe is very rich and filling so countering them with a lighter option is best:

    1. Salad: A fresh salad provides a refreshing contrast to the rich and crispy fried macaroni and cheese. Consider a simple green salad with a light vinaigrette or a Caesar salad with croutons.
    2. Vegetables: Roasted or steamed vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, or green beans can add a healthy element to the meal while balancing the richness of the fried macaroni and cheese.
    3. Soup: A cup of tomato soup or a hearty vegetable soup can be a comforting and satisfying addition to your meal, especially during colder months.

    Storage

To store the fried macaroni and cheese balls, allow them to fully cool to room temperature before placing them in an airtight container. Store them in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days or in the freezer for up to 1-2 months.

    Reheating Fried Macaroni and Cheese

When you’re ready to enjoy your fried macaroni and cheese, reheat it in the oven or a toaster oven. This helps maintain its crispy texture.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), place the macaroni and cheese on a baking sheet, and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until it’s heated through and the outer layer is crispy.

You can also use a microwave, however, keep in mind that it may make the fried coating less crispy. Heat it in short intervals, around 30 seconds at a time, until it’s heated to the center of the ball.
