This delicious green bean casserole with bacon recipe is a comforting dish that combines tender green beans, creamy mushroom sauce, crispy bacon, and a crunchy topping just like the traditional green bean casserole.

It’s a popular side dish often served during holidays, family gatherings, or any time you’re craving a hearty and flavorful addition to your meal.

This green bean casserole recipe is for 12 servings, so plenty to feed a crowd!

This piping-hot casserole dish is filled with vibrant green beans that are the perfect level of tenderness. While this recipe does not use fresh green beans, they can certainly be used.

The star of this casserole is the creamy mushroom sauce that envelops the green beans. Made from scratch, the sauce boasts a velvety texture and a rich umami flavor that comes from sautéed mushrooms.

The sauce is seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices that enhance its depth, making each spoonful a burst of savory goodness.

Now, let’s not forget about the irresistible bacon.

Crispy bacon bits are generously scattered throughout the casserole, providing a smoky and salty punch that complements the mildness of the beans and the creaminess of the sauce.

These bacon pieces are like savory surprises, adding bursts of flavor as you dig into the dish.

How to Cook Green Bean Casserole with Bacon

    • Lightly grease a 13″ x 9″ casserole baking dish. Drain cans of green beans and pour them into the casserole dish.
A large pan with sliced mushrooms
A large pan with creamy sauce
A large pan with creamy sauce and bacon bits
    • Add bacon to a large skillet over medium heat. I prefer to actually cut all the bacon into small pieces prior to putting them in the pan. Cook bacon until crispy, set on a plate with a paper towel, and then crumble once cooled. Set aside.
    • Add butter to the same pan and scrape up any bacon bits. Add mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Cook until tender, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Add flour and stir with the mushrooms. Slowly add Marsala wine followed by chicken broth and half & half cream until well blended.
    • Add ¾ of the reserved bacon bits, Worcestershire, grated Parmesan, thyme, salt, and pepper. Allow sauce to simmer until thickened. Pour the mushroom sauce over the green beans in the casserole dish and gently stir.

    Substitutes

Cream: There are many substitutes that can be added to this dish. For instance, if you cannot find half & half, mix equal parts heavy cream and whole milk.

Green Beans: This is a canned green bean recipe, but fresh green beans can also be used. Simply add water to a pot, bring it to a boil, add the green beans, and cook for 7-8 minutes. If you like them to be more tender-crisp only cook for 4-5 minutes.

Sauce: If homemade cream of mushroom soup is not your thing or you want to skip a step, by all means, use canned cream of mushroom soup. It saves the cooking time on the stove!

French Fried Onions: To make a completely from-scratch version try making your own french fried onions.

Can Green Bean Casserole Be Prepared in Advance

Green bean casserole with bacon can be made ahead.

    • Prepare the dish according to directions right up until it goes into the oven.
    • Remember to save bacon bits for the top.
    • Cover it with aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
    • Before baking, remove it from the refrigerator for 30 minutes so that it can come up to room temperature, then bake as normal, and don’t forget the french fried onions, Parmesan, and bacon bits on top!

    Storage

To store leftover green bean casserole, allow it to fully cool first but leave it out at room temperature no longer than 2 hours at a maximum.

Keep it in the refrigerator in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap.

Can I Freeze Green Bean Casserole

Freeze green bean casserole for up to 2-3 months in an airtight container.

To thaw, transfer the casserole from the freezer to the refrigerator and allow it to thaw for several hours or overnight. Once thawed, you can reheat the casserole in the oven.

How to Heat Up Green Bean Casserole

    • Preheat the oven to around 350°F.
    • Transfer the casserole to an oven-safe dish if it wasn’t originally frozen in one.
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil to prevent the top from getting too crispy during reheating.
    • Bake for about 20-30 minutes or until the casserole is heated through.
