    This is a recipe for yellow cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting. They are made of moist and delicious yellow cake and topped with chocolate fudge icing. They’re perfect for birthdays!

    • Butter
    • Granulated Sugar
    • Large Eggs
    • Pure Vanilla Extract
    • All-Purpose Flour
    • Baking Powder
    • Salt
    • Milk
    • Sour Cream

    Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Ingredients

    • Butter
    • Shortening
    • Pure Vanilla Extract
    • Confectioners’ Sugar
    • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
    • Evaporated Milk

    How to Make Yellow Cupcakes from Scratch

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line cupcake pans with 24 cupcake liners.
    2. In a large mixing bowl or a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, cream together softened butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, mix well.
    3. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt and mix into the bowl. Blend in milk and sour cream.
    4. Fill cupcake liners â…” full, about 3 tablespoons each.
    5. Bake in the oven for 15-18 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cupcakes comes out clean.

    How to Make Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

    1. In a large mixing bowl, or a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, add softened butter, shortening, vanilla, and cocoa powder. Mix well. Slowly alternate adding in confectioners’ sugar and evaporated milk, blending well after each addition.
    2. Frost cupcakes once they have fully cooled.

    How to Decorate Yellow Cupcakes

    I used Wilton’s 2D icing tip for the cupcakes in the photos. A 1M icing tip also works as a slightly more open star tip.

    Ingredients

    Yellow Cupcakes

    • ¾ cup Butter, softened
    • 1 ½ cups Granulated Sugar
    • 3 Large Eggs
    • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
    • 2 ¼ cups All-Purpose Flour
    • 2 tsp Baking Powder
    • 1 tsp Salt
    • 1 cup Milk
    • 3 tbsp Sour Cream
    • 2 Drops Yellow Food Coloring, optional

    Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

    • 1 cup Butter, softened
    • 2 tbsp Shortening
    • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
    • 4 cups Confectioners’ Sugar
    • ½ cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
    • ½ cup Evaporated Milk

    Instructions
