How to Make a Fourth of July Cupcake
For these truly American cupcakes, I combine the two most iconic elements of the 4th of July: our red, white, and blue theme and fireworks.
The colors of the flag shine through in the cupcake layers. It makes for a fun surprise when peeling back the cupcake liner paper.
The fireworks theme comes through in the colored sprinkles and streamer cupcake toppers. You can buy these toppers ready-made or DIY them from a straw and colored foil paper.
As for the base of the cupcake recipe, I decided on a simple but moist vanilla cupcake and vanilla frosting. The red and blue food coloring or gelatine powder comes out best in a vanilla cupcake batter.
You can choose to add a drop of food coloring to the frosting for an even more colorful display. Alternate the different frosting colors and sprinkles colors for a wow effect.
How to Make Layered Cupcakes
Making a layered cupcake is not much different from making a larger layered cake. In fact, I’d say that the smaller size of the cupcakes makes them a little more forgiving.
In a larger tray, the cake batter has more space to move around and there is a greater chance of air bubbles. Cupcake liners are compact so the cake forms nicely.
To get nice even layers, I add equal amounts of each colored batter. I found 1 tablespoon to be just the right amount.
Please use a proper measuring spoon for this step of the layers of the cupcakes. The more precise your measurements, the better the layers come out.
There is no need to bake the layers separately. Since this recipe calls for the same cupcake batter for each layer, they all have the same cooking time.

Instead of red, white, and blue cupcakes, use the same three colors for a swirled frosting. You can also use a single flag color for the cupcake and use the other colors in the cupcake decorations.
Add icing sugar stars on top. If you have a truly steady hand, you could even try to make draw the American flag using frosting.
I cannot wait for the 4th of July! Show me your fun family photos and how these cupcakes turned out for you.

Instructions
4th of July Cupcakes
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line muffin pans with 24 cupcake liners.
- In an electric mixer, or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, cream together butter and sugar. Add vanilla and eggs, blend well. Sift or whisk together dry ingredients to break up any lumps. Begin alternating as you add dry ingredients and milk to the mixing bowl. Mix well.
- Separate batter equally into 3 bowls. Mix red icing gel/food color and 3 tablespoons of red gelatin powder in one bowl of cupcake batter, blue icing gel and 3 tablespoons of blue gelatin powder in another bowl, and leave one bowl of batter plain.
- Add 1 tablespoon of blue batter to the bottom of each cupcake liner. Spread to fill the bottom of the liner. Add 1 tablespoon of plain cupcake batter and spread to cover the blue on the bottom. Then add 1 tablespoon of red batter on top, spreading to cover the plain batter.
- Bake for approximately 17-21 minutes, or until the tops spring back when lightly touched or a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
